The dark comes and he is afraid, timidly asking, “Can I sleep in your room tonight?”
I look down at my littlest guy and tell him grab his pillow and we’ll make him a pallet. The relief is immediate and he runs to gather his things.
Why he sometimes feels brave sleeping with his brothers, and then has nights needing to be with us I haven’t figured out, but I do know that there is a genuine fear of the dark.
Tonight we were sitting together, just he and I, as others were preparing for bed. I was working on my lesson to teach the kids at church Sunday, and he was working on the boys’ new love, Qixels. 🙂
He began a conversation which I was half listening to. “Uh-huh…uh-huh…” I muttered as I continued to type.
All of the sudden my ears pricked up at the mention of the dark. “I’m not afraid of the dark because I can see the reflection of the light.”
He looked at me with a huge smile as I stopped working and absorbed his words. Instead of, “uh-huh”…I knew this was a moment to pay attention. “Light is a wonderful thing!” I exclaimed. “Who is our light?”
“Jesus!” he replied.
“We can be a light too,” I reminded him.
Sometimes I get so caught up in the darkness I lose sight of the light. I focus on the difficulties and forget the deliverer from the darkness. Down. Depressed. Discouraged. Wondering when I might regain the joy and freedom I once felt.
I’ll open my bible and the light fills me. Little by little the darkness flees and I bask in his presence. As His light is reflected from the Word to my soul I climb from the deep, dark pit and enjoy the warmth of His light.
My sweet littlest boy brought to my attention this night a lesson I needed to hear. I can’t see the darkness when light is reflected. Light comes in many different forms.
- worship music
- a beautiful sunset
- my kids’ laughter
- a friend’s presence
- my husband’s voice
When I take time to think about it, my list could go on, and on, and on…
As we talked a little more about the light, my little guy began singing, “You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men. You are the light of the world.”
Are you in the dark? Let His light reflect into your heart and soul and rest in His goodness. Take a minute to listen to this sweet song Davis was singing and may it bring light. And may YOU be a light to this dark world.
